Huang's preferred theoretical framework is variationist linguistics. His research interests fall within the domain of quantitative linguistics, including geolinguistics, language variation & change, and dialectology. He views linguistic variation as a window into the underlying structure of human language and the nature of linguistic knowledge. His research interests specifically focus on:

l  Geolinguistics, sociolinguistics & dialectometry

l  Variation studies (synchronic & diachronic)

l  Quantitative linguistics

l  Communication dynamics

l  Computational social science
